Detailed description of Long Bay Club

Long Bay Club, is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Longs, South Carolina.

Long Bay Club officially opened for play in 1988. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is one of his signature courses. (Signature meaning Jack himself does the entire course routing on site)

Considered one of the most difficult golf courses on the Mytle Beach Grand Strand. Formidable in every feature, Long Bay displays countless large man-made mounds, handsome but deceiving par-3 holes and bottomless bunkers. The Long Bay Club golf course is considered to be "one of the Strand's most difficult."

This course was one of the first courses to include waste bunkers so massive that they serve secondary duty as cart paths. This adds not only to the natural look of the course, but also to the difficulty.

Covering 7,025 yards from the back tees, it plays to an intimidating rating of 74.3 and a slope of 143.

# 4, a 472-yard par-4 is the No. 1 handicap hole at Long Bay Club. This is the first hole on the course to feature waste areas running down both sides of the fairway. After hitting your tee shot and going after your ball, cart riders are greeted with a sign reading: "Waste Bunker Is Cart Path." For wayward drivers of the ball, it could just as well read: "Waste Bunker Is Your Next Shot. Get Used To It."

#10 is the signature hole at Long Bay. This is a short par-4 of 352 yards that has a narrow fairway landing strip surrounded by a horseshoe waste bunker. The green is elevated with small but significant mounding behind. These elevated Nicklaus foothills are found mostly on the opening holes of the back nine. They can come into play and leave delicate chips from a grassy precipice.

#13 is the par-3 island green. It plays to just 156 yards but can test your nerves and concentration, particularly when the pin locations flirt with the water.

#18, the second handicapped hole, is your final challenge. It is a 445-yard par-4 that doglegs right with water running down the right side.

Holes No. 7, 10, 13 and 18 made it into the pages of the book "The 100 Greatest Holes along the Grand Strand." These Long Bay Club golf course holes were selected from the well over 2,000 golf holes in the area.

We (4 players) have played the course at least 6 times in the last 10 years. Always a good test of golf but always slow play is the norm even with marshals present. Signature hole (#10) and island green are memorable. They 'lost' their greens in May/June but 15 of 18 have come back to normal. We will play again!

Having a friend who lives there is a plus, but it is well worth it even if I knew no one there. No matter how many times I play this course, it is never the same. It should be on a short list of must play courses. A gem !!

It's worth playing again just to play #10. Every hole seemed to have a unique twist to it. No course Marshall and only saw drink lady once, and prices where high. Workers stood around one of the greens - smoking and made comments while we were putting. Pace of play was slow.

I play this course every year as part of the Retired Military Golf Classic tournament, the week after Memorial Day.

This is the only Jack Nicklaus course in the immediate area, the other being Pawleys Island, which is some distance south, and it is a jewel. Every hole at Long Bay Club is different, and there are no pushovers, starting from the first hole with a split fairway and two tiered green, to #10, which is a fairway surrounded by a U-shaped waste area that starts 100 yards off the tee and runs all the way to the green on both sides of the fairway. Even the innocuous appearing holes have some sneaky little quirk that will have you shaking your head: Jack is quite a designer. Several of the greens are quite shallow, but very wide...which makes it tough to hold a long iron. Overall, a really good test of your game, but not so brutal you will walk away. Conditions on 6-3-10 were terrific: everything was in great shape, although the greens were a little slower than they looked. There is some water, but not a lot, althhough there is a island green par-3, which is very playable.

I highly recommend this course.
